Golf fever for the Millennium Open at St Andrews is spilling over into the market for memorabilia, according to a West Midlands based auctioneer partnership. Mullock Madeley has received commission bids for a significant number of golf collectibles and antiques to be auctioned at Cupar near St Andrews on Tuesday, 18th July
John Mullock believes that top items are likely to sell well into four figures but that the 600 lot catalogue has a vast range of golf collectibles and price tags accessible to the enthusiasts as well as the investors.
“We’ve had tremendous interest in this catalogue, particularly from abroad. The history and heritage of the game fascinates collectors from Japan, America, Canada and Europe. The UK and Scotland in particular hold the key to a very rich golfing legacy,” he said.
“St Andrews is recognised as the birthplace of that legacy, with the Millennium Open to take place later in the week, what better place to hold this auction of golfing memorabilia?”
One of the earliest golf balls to go under the hammer is a feathery golf ball dating back to 1840, still with a good finish. An 1855 Forgan style hand hammered gutty and a Silver Town gutty circa 1895 are also generating great interest.
A scarce Jack Nicklaus, Slazenger ping putter has captured attention, as has an early track iron with thick hozel and heavy neck nicking, expected to realise a four-figure price tag.
Viewing of the extensive catalogue, with sections for clubs, putters, books, magazines, pictures, prints and collectibles, including jewellery and china, takes place on Monday 2pm until 6.30pm and Tuesday 8.30am until 11.45am, prior to sale commencement at 12 noon.
