One of the world’s largest privately owned collections of rare and antique golf equipment is to be sold at an online auction later this month.
Over 560 items, including rare clubs and golf-themed ephemera are to be sold as separate lots at an online auction hosted by Theodore Bruce Auctioneers & Valuers on June 20 and June 21.
The clubs are owned by Richard Begg, a member of the Royal Adelaide Golf Club for nearly 70 years, who is an enthusiastic golfer and collector of antique hickory shaft golf clubs.
Begg started his collection in 2003, following a trip to New Zealand, where he was presented with a hickory shaft putter by his son, Dr William Begg. His collection includes 80 clubs sourced from Adelaide Hills collector Doug Jordan, and the entire collection of hickory golf clubs belonging to former golfing authority and author David Stirk. Begg purchased the collection from Stirk during a visit to the UK in 2008, and many of these clubs bear original tags that may be cross referenced in Stirk’s books.
Also in the collection are clubs by Tom Stewart, Cann & JH Taylor and Sir William Mills who, trading as the Standard Golf Company, produced clubs ‘Under Royal Patronage’.
