Southworth Development purchases Machrihanish Dunes

7.27am 15th April 2009 - Property

Southworth Development, LLC announced it has purchased a controlling interest in the Kintyre Development Company (KDC) through a Southworth affiliate. Southworth has been a minority shareholder of the company since 2006.

KDC owns and is developing the Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club, as well as the Ugadale Hotel & Golf Cottages in Machrihanish and the historic Royal Hotel in Campbeltown, Scotland.

Southworth has wasted little time in getting to work, injecting several million pounds into the project to ensure that the property is finished on schedule and to the highest standard. Currently, construction on the first phase of luxury Golf Cottages continues to progress rapidly along with numerous improvements to the golf course and overall infrastructure surrounding the property.

“In addition to opening Machrihanish Dunes, we will soon begin the restoration of the historic Ugadale Arms and Royal Hotel, as well as launching the sale of the fractional free-hold golf cottages,” said David Southworth, founder of Southworth Development. “The restoration of these landmark properties will play an important role in our quest to attract golfers world-wide to the highly anticipated Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club and discover this to be an irresistible golf and holiday destination.”

When Machrihanish Dunes opens officially 21st July 2009 (a soft opening is scheduled for 2nd May, 2009), it will be the first championship links golf course built in Scotland on a Site of Special Scientific interest (SSSi) in over 100 years. It will also be the first 18-hole links golf course to be built on the west coast of Scotland in 100 years. Located adjacent to the famed Machrihanish Golf Club designed by Old Tom Morris, Machrihanish Dunes measures 7,300 yards and features six greens and five tees at the ocean’s edge.

Machrihanish Dunes was designed by David McLay Kidd, internationally acclaimed for his design of Bandon Dunes in Oregon and the Castle Course at St. Andrews.

“Southworth has continually demonstrated their determination and support to create an unparalleled golf experience at Machrihanish Dunes” said David McLay Kidd. “They remain dedicated to the vision of the project, the way golf began, and we are thrilled to be apart of this historic undertaking.”
