HMH Golf & Leisure is a small niche practice, well known for discreet one to one deals at premium levels. In 2006 HMH bought or sold two golf hotels and 6 golf courses with a total value of £26million.
The market remains strong and active at the present time and just last month the firm had over £21million worth of golf courses and hotels under offer. These included a golf hotel in the south east, 27 holes south of London, a golf and leisure complex in the Midlands, a 46 bedroom hotel near Bristol and a driving range in the north east.
These were all off market deals, with the exception of one, but two sales have now been concluded and some of the details are now known.
Old Thorns Hotel & Golf Course, Liphook, Hampshire has 34 bedrooms, a health club and some residential properties as well as 18 holes set in an estate of 400 acres in all. HMH Golf & Leisure was asked to approach buyers one at a time and covertly quoting a guide price of £8 million.
The transaction was agreed early in the New Year and completed at the beginning of April. The actual price paid is not available. The purchaser is Martin Shaw, former owner of Dunston Hall Golf Club in Norwich which he sold to De Vere Hotels some six years ago. www.oldthorns.com
Jointly with DTZ, HMH Golf & Leisure placed The Bristol Inn, Bristol on the market last October and completed the transaction on the 4th April. The freehold of this profitable business with 46 bedrooms, function and syndicate rooms and in a convenient location for many sporting activities had a guide price of £3 million and this was exceeded.
In France HMH is marketing one of Europe’s top ranked golf venues. Deep in the Loire Valley, surrounded by ancient forest, Les Bordes is an extraordinary golfing retreat. In the seclusion and beauty of a former hunting estate the 54 holes of golf course are just one a half hours – and an entire world – away from Paris. www.lesbordes.com The guide price is thought to be around €25million.
