Mystery golf course sale

8.30am 24th February 2004 - Property

The freehold of an outstanding links golf course is for sale for £4.25 million but at present the location is known only to a handful of people.
Last Friday’s Financial Times commercial property advertising feature carried an ad for ‘An Outstanding Links Golf Course In The Top 100 British Courses‘ but gave no further details and supplied a box number for replies – from ‘principals only‘.
Many golf course sales, particularly at the top end of the market, are conducted privately,  through specialist agencies who already have a pretty good idea of the identities of the prospective buyers for any given property. Other transactions are carried out in the open market, usually after an extensive marketing campaign.
The location of the golf course advertised in the Financial Times is as yet unknown but the process of identification has already started. The fact that many links courses listed in the ‘Top 100 British Courses‘ are owned by their members and therefore unlikely to be offered for sale will no doubt encourage many people to speculate.
More information is available from Bo No B9247, Financial Times Ltd, One Southwark Bridge, London SE1 9HL but only for ‘principals‘ of course.
