HMH is instructed to bring Spey Bay Golf Course to market, with offers in excess of £1.5 million invited for the Scottish venue.
The sale provides a rare opportunity to acquire a truly unique asset. Commissioned by the Duke of Gordon and designed by the notable course architect Ben Sayers in 1907, Spey Bay Golf Course is steeped in history. Being one of only 247 true links courses in the world, and now one of Scotland’s top 100 golf courses, adds to Spey Bay’s allure.
Situated close to Fochabers on Scotland’s Moray Coast, Spey Bay Golf Course sits at the mouth of the River Spey. Perfectly located for any Highlands trip, the course enjoys a stunning natural setting with coastal views whilst still being accessible from Inverness and Aberdeen airports.

Once described as ‘an unsung links layout routed over undulating shingle banks’ the Spey Bay facilities comprise an 18-hole, 5,860-yard, par-70 course, a single storey clubhouse with gym, shop and ancillary facilities, practice facilities (including a former driving range), and touring motorhome/caravan park.
Chris Bruce, CEO of the current owner, LinksDAO, said: “It’s been an incredible and rewarding experience operating and improving Spey Bay in conjunction with our community. LinksDAO members have gotten the opportunity to experience a true Scottish links course and participate in its revival, making it a much better course and club and even breaking into the Scotland Top 100 this year.
“However, with the majority of our members in the US, we’ve come to the difficult decision that it makes the most sense to focus closer to home and pass Spey Bay on to a new owner that can continue the work we’ve started. Spey Bay is a fantastic golf course and destination, and we are excited to see its next chapter.”

Ben Allen, director at property agents HMH, said: “Spey Bay is a truly unique asset, one that we anticipate will be of great interest to golf enthusiasts from around the world. LinksDAO has reinvigorated the business during its period of ownership but the obvious scope for further commercialisation remains. It will be fascinating to see who emerges as the successful buyer of this historic property and to learn their future plans for the club.”
