Crown Golf acquires American Golf UK

4.20pm 3rd January 2005 - Property

Crown Golf today announced that it has acquired American Golf UK from its US parent company, creating a new organisation that will be Europe’s largest golf club operator. The deal will result in a combined group that operates and professionally manages 55 golf courses over 31 properties across the UK, with 27,000 members and 1,500 employees.
Commenting on the acquisition, John Weir, chief executive of Crown Golf, said, “We have great admiration for what American Golf have achieved in the UK and this acquisition provides a tremendous opportunity to combine best practice from two of the industry’s leading operators, and set a new bench mark for golf management.”
“The consolidation is exciting news for many parties including our employees, club members, suppliers and the industry as a whole. As well as growing the business, we will become recognised for our operational excellence and the combined group will provide new opportunities for our current and future employees. We already have a pipeline of talent within both businesses, and will further enhance our management training programme to become one of the foremost employers within the leisure industry.”
Other areas of focus for the new business will include the continuing development of grassroots and junior golf; the expansion of the member benefits package; and the roll out of structured academy coaching across the estate.
John Weir concludes, “The combined group will be very strong financially, creating an excellent platform for future acquisition and consolidation and allowing us to continue to invest in and improve the current portfolio of courses.”
