Middlesbrough Council has instructed property sales agents HMH Golf & Leisure to bring Middlesbrough Municipal Golf Centre to market, with offers invited before December 6.
The venue, which first opened in 1977, is located on the outskirts of Middlesbrough, with facilities comprising an 18-hole, 6,326-yard, par 71 golf course; a 20-bay floodlit driving range; practice ground and practice putting green; two-storey 957 sq m clubhouse; separate golf shop and greenkeeping facilities, along with two three-bedroom semi-detached houses.
Chris Cooke, Elected Mayor and Executive Member for Adult Social Care & Public Health, said: “Middlesbrough Municipal Golf Centre is a fantastic facility, which is why we are seeking a new and experienced operator not only to look after the courses and clubhouse, but also to meet the Council’s aim of ensuring everyone has the opportunity to play the great game of golf for years to come.”
“The chosen operator will need to maintain Middlesbrough Municipal Golf Centre as a pay-to-play facility, meaning anyone can visit, and will be expected to encourage participation in golf and an active lifestyle. Our preference is to receive offers on a leasehold basis but offers for the freehold may be considered on the strict understanding that the land must remain in golf use.”
Proposals for Middlesbrough Municipal Golf Centre will be evaluated not only on the proposed financial bid terms, but also on how well interested operators are able to evidence their ability to meet the Council’s objectives, which include:
- To preserve the existing golf facilities for the benefit of local residents.
- To secure an experienced operator for the property.
- To encourage increased participation in golf.
- To secure capital investment in the facilities
- To encourage additional community outreach programmes.
Ben Allen at HMH said: “Following our recent successful marketing of Tapton Park Golf Course in Chesterfield and Sinfin Golf Course in Derby, we are pleased to be offering another municipal golf facility to the market. Based on the market’s reaction to Tapton Park and Sinfin, we are expecting strong interest in Middlesbrough Municipal Golf Centre.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for a tenant/purchaser to acquire a very well located and long established golf facility with undoubted potential for further commercialisation.”
