Bovey Castle launches junior academy

10.50am 4th February 2025 - Practice Range & Teaching

Bovey Castle, the five-star Dartmoor-based resort, has launched a new academy aimed at nurturing the next generation of players.

The new ‘Get into Golf’ Academy will offer those aged 16 and under the opportunity to get to grips with the sport under the tailored guidance of PGA instructors on an 18-hole championship golf course.

The Academy is hosting a three-day course during February half-term between February 17-19 with two-hour sessions on each day, starting at 11am – with more courses planned in the future.

Day one focuses on the rules of the game as well as grip and stance techniques, and interactive games to reinforce learning, such as golf bingo and target practice challenges.

Developing swing technique is covered on day two, with drills to improve balance and posture, followed by fun games including the “longest drive contest” to develop skills in a competitive setting.

The course culminates in chipping and putting practice around the greens with specific drills such as “par-18” and the “chipping ladder”; as well as engaging challenges such as the “putt-putt challenge”.

It comes as the golf club at Bovey Castle has seen membership numbers rise by 66% year-on-year under the guidance of Rob Selley, the hotel’s PGA Golf Manager.

Selley said: “The interest in golf in general and our course amongst adults is continuing to grow, but we want to ensure that we are bringing through the next generation of players and golf fans too. Our junior academy is perfect for youngsters who are keen to learn more about the game in a friendly and supportive environment – which is the most important ingredient for any aspiring golfer.

“We are limiting the group sizes to a small number to ensure that coaching is delivered in a personalised way so that those attending can take away meaningful tips and advice to develop their game further.

“We’re really proud to have seen more locals taking up a golf membership with us in recent years, which has led to a recent £40,000 investment in our new all-weather driving range, and we’d love to see more local children taking advantage of this all year round too.”
