Tiger speaks out on prototype driver

12.15am 3rd October 2003 - People

Tiger Woods is putting a prototype Nike ‘IGNITE‘ driver into play at the WGC Amex Championship this week. “I think I found one I like,” he said. “I‘m excited about putting it into play and very curious to see what happens.
“It feels stable, that’s the biggest thing. When you hit it, it doesn‘t feel like it’s moving all over the place. A lot of times, you‘ll find with the hotter drivers that it becomes harder to work it. There’s more balance, that’s the great thing.”
Kel Devlin, global sports marketing director for Nike Golf, said, “We wanted to get it right. We said to him, ‘Don‘t put it in the bag until you‘re ready.‘ The goal was to get it in there by January. We‘re a little ahead of our internal timeline, but it’s very important to get it back in.
“The new driver is 335cc. We can‘t disclose the materials used in the driver but Nike’s engineers have been working on it for six months now.”
The Nike ‘IGNITE‘ is expected to be launched in Spring 2004.
