Lincolnshire Ladies’ County Captain and seven times County champion, Helen Hewlett (née Dobson) has accepted an invitation from the Ladies’ Golf Union, to be team manager of the Great Britain & Ireland teams for the Vagliano Trophy matches at Malone Golf Club, Belfast on June 26-27 and next year’s Curtis Cup match at Dun Laoghaire Golf Club, near Dublin.
“I was absolutely delighted when I was called and it was suggested I manage the Vagliano and Curtis Cup teams. I feel very honoured to have been asked and I’m really looking forward to working with both Elaine and Claire (the Team Captains) the LGU and the teams,” said Helen Hewlett who, as Skegness-born Helen Dobson, had a stellar amateur career before turning professional in 1990.
Helen won the Girls’ British Open Amateur Championship in 1987. In 1989 she won just about every big tournament she played in that year. She won the Ladies’ British Open Amateur Championship and was the first player to complete the double when she won the Ladies’ British stroke-play title later that season. That year, Helen also won the English Ladies’ Amateur Championship, the English Girls’ Championship and was a member of the winning GB and I team in the Vagliano Trophy match at Venezia Golf Club, Italy. In 1990. Helen played in the Curtis Cup match at Somerset Hills.
Helen played on the tour for nine years during which time she won the Ladies’ European Tour European Masters and the LPGA’s State Farm Classic in 1993.She retired from the LPGA Tour in 2001 and was reinstated as an amateur a number of years ago.
Helen now lives in Welton, near Lincoln. She is married to Paul and they have a daughter, Tally. She plays ‘a little social’ golf and still holds a +3 handicap. She occasionally turns out for the Lincolnshire County team when needed.
