Five-time PGA TOUR winner and former Ryder Cup player Ken Green is hoping to inspire more people with a disability when he makes his debut at the G4D Tour @ BMW PGA Championship.
The penultimate G4D Tour event of 2023 takes place on the West Course at Wentworth Club from September 11-12, 2023, and 65-year-old Green will be making his G4D Tour bow as part of a ten-strong field in England.
The American won professional golf tournaments all over the world, before losing his right leg in 2009 due to amputation following a road traffic accident caused by a tyre blow-out, which also led to the loss of life of others inside the vehicle.
Green, who won two points in the tied 1989 Ryder Cup at The Belfry, fought back to health using the possibility of once more playing the game he loved and is now feeling the benefits both on and off the course.
“I love golf now as much as ever so my goal is literally to score as low as I can, but then I have a new job – and that’s to help grow golf for the disabled, so no matter what I shoot out there, it’s a win.
“I’ve actually watched Wentworth often on TV and I’m really looking forward to playing it as I’ve heard and feel like it’s a great course.”
The Connecticut native will compete alongside players from seven different nations on the West Course and is as competitive as ever when it comes down to business, but is also happy to take time to share his wisdom with his colleagues.
“It differs in many ways yet is also the same in others. I’m grinding just as hard but now I don’t beat myself up, as life’s lessons have taught me so much. Then I’m also dealing with constant pain from a CRPS (complex regional pain syndrome) nerve disorder, so that’s a massive battle within the golf battle of course.
“I have helped many people with a disability with golf tips as I really understand what we’re capable of. The biggest difference now for me is that when I was good I could be consistent, whereas today every swing is a mystery.”
Green will be joined at Wentworth by defending champion and World Number One in the World Ranking for Golfers with Disability (WR4GD) Kipp Popert, Irish duo Brendan Lawlor and Conor Stone and two-time winner in 2023 Juan Postigo Arce.
