Golfers swing into action to eradicate polio

8.06am 7th April 2008 - People

Golf lovers across the UK are being invited to join an official world record breaking attempt in June and raise money for the End Polio Now initiative.

The world record attempt, taking place at the Dundonald Links Course in Ayrshire, Scotland on Sunday, 22nd June, 2008, has been organised by Rotary clubs in Scotland who hope to set the record for the most golfers on a single course to complete a round of golf in 24 hours. Organisers hope to smash the current record of 623 golfers, set in China in 2007.

Money raised will go towards the efforts being undertaken by Rotary International, in partnership with World Health Organisation, UNICEF, and US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to stamp out Polio in the four remaining countries: Afghanistan, India. Pakistan and Nigeria.

Rotarian Drew Hughes, who is helping to organise the world record attempt, said, ” The original record was set at St Andrews Bay in June 2003, when 491 golfers, young and old, pro and amateur, each played a round of golf to set the record for the most number of rounds of golf played on a course in a single day. It’s time to bring the record back home!

“We welcome anyone who wants to be a world record breaker; families, company teams, golf clubs and individuals. It isn‘t about the lowest score it is about going round in the minimum amount of time.

“It’s for a wonderful cause. Polio eradication is one of Rotary’s main strategic goals and there are now only four countries left reporting cases. We are so close to stamping out this highly preventable disease for good.”

The first holes will be floodlit to allow a 3.30am start. Anyone wishing to take part should log on to www.worldrecordgolf.com or contact 07980545784. Early registration will ensure preferred tee-off time.
