The Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation (EMF) is proud to announce the raising of £3.5 million towards the building of two Maggie’s Centres which will be built in Lanarkshire and Aberdeen. Both these centres will be named after Colin Montgomerie’s late mother, Elizabeth.

The Lanarkshire Centre, will provide a programme of practical and emotional care to people with cancer, and their families and will be built on the grounds ofMonklands GeneralHospital. The Aberdeen Centre is under construction at Foresterhill hospital site,Aberdeenwas the only city inScotlandnot supported by a Maggies Centre and will provide cancer support through the Grampian region.

The Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation was founded by golfing legend Colin Montgomerie, winner of eight European Tour Order of Merit titles and captain of Europe’s victorious Ryder Cup side in 2010, in memory of his mother who died from lung cancer. EMF has supported Maggie’s Cancer Care since 2009, raising funds under the Monty’s Maggie’s Appeal banner for a new Centre in Lanarkshire and Aberdeen.

Colin Montgomerie, said: “The new Centre in Lanarkshire will serve a population of 562,000. That population experiences around 3,500 new diagnoses of cancer each year. I am so proud that my Foundation has generated the funds required to commence building of the much required centres.

The new Maggie’s Centre at the Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation Building, designed by Edinburgh architects Reich and Hall, will provide a welcoming and comforting environment where people can seek the help and support they need. The design won Gold in the 2011 Roses Design Awards in the category of Proposed Building of the Year.

Maggie’s CEO, Laura Lee said:  “The personal commitment from Colin Montgomerie, his family and the Foundation is outstanding and deeply significant to Maggie’s. The funds raised will allow us to help more people in Lanarkshire with cancer access the practical and emotional resources that are so needed after a cancer diagnosis.. What has been achieved is a wonderful tribute to the memory of Colin’s mother, Elizabeth Montgomerie.”

EMF have raised the funds due to the generosity of the general public and through a series of high-profile events. Colin Montgomerie said, “The support that I have received from friends, family and colleagues has been overwhelming. So many people immediately understood what we were trying to do and how people with cancer would benefit from the Appeal. I would like to thank them for constantly going the extra mile to help us achieve this goal.”
