Duke of York to be Captain of the R&A

The Past Captains of the R&A have nominated His Royal Highness The Duke of York, CVO, ADC as Captain of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club for the Year 2003 – 2004. The Duke will be the sixth member of the Royal Family to captain the Club

The Past Captains, having conferred together, are pleased to announce that they have nominated His Royal Highness The Duke of York, C.V.O., A.D.C. as Captain of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club for the Year 2003 – 2004.

His Royal Highness became a member of the Club in 1992 and is currently a member of the Amateur Status Committee. He is an enthusiastic golfer and plays from a handicap of 7.

Five members of the Royal Family have previously Captained the Club as follows:

1863 H.R.H. The Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII)

1876 H.R.H. Prince Leopold

1922 H.R.H. The Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII)

1930 H.R.H. The Duke of York (later King George VI)

1937 H.R.H. The Duke of Kent.

The nomination of His Royal Highness as Captain for the year 2003-2004, the 250th Anniversary of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club, has caused the Past Captains to bring forward this announcement to facilitate the administration of the special events planned in celebration of this occasion.
