In a statement issued on Monday Peter Dawson, Chief Executive of the R&A, made the announcement that David Hill, The R&A’s Director of Championships, has announced his decision to retire, with immediate effect.

David’s R&A career spanned over thirty years of responsibility for staging The Open Championship and other R&A events.

The announcement has surprised many. As recently as last week, David was carrying out normal duties when he spoke of his delight that the Senior Open Championship is returning to Turnberry next year for a record seventh time.

Peter Dawson, R&A Chief Executive, said, “With David’s retirement, we are losing a man with vast experience, whose immense contribution to the development of The Open has been invaluable. He leaves us with our thanks and very best wishes.”

With this year’s Open Championship, at Royal St George’s, just over four months away, Mr Dawson concluded: “The R&A Championship Department will now report to me until a more permanent reorganisation is announced in due course.”
