United States Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson has named Jim Furyk and Fred Couples as vice captains for the 2023 Ryder Cup, which will take place between Sept 29 – Oct 1 at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome, Italy.

Johnson previously appointed former Ryder Cup captains Steve Stricker and Davis Love III as vice captains.

“Jim and I have been friends for more than 20 years,” said Johnson. “He’s an amazing leader, mentor and someone I trust. He understands what it takes to compete at the highest level, and how to be a team player. I will be leaning on his experience a ton in the lead up to Marco Simone in September.”

Furyk’s extensive Ryder Cup CV includes serving as captain in 2018 at Le Golf National in France. The 52-year-old was a vice captain in 2016 at Hazeltine and in 2021 at Whistling Straits. As a player, Furyk competed in nine consecutive Ryder Cups between 1997 and 2014.

“I’ve been involved in the Ryder Cup since 1997, and my passion for this event is unmatched,” said Furyk. “Captain Zach Johnson shares that passion, and I can’t wait to get to Italy to help our US team work toward retaining the Ryder Cup at Marco Simone.”

This marks Couples’ third stint as a Ryder Cup Vice Captain. The 63-year-old helped the United States win the 2021 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits. He also served as Vice Captain in 2012.

“Competing as a player in the Ryder Cup and serving as a Vice Captain for the US team top the list of the most fulfilling weeks of my career,” said Couples. “Zach is an incredible leader, and I look forward to helping him over the next five months and in Italy to bring home a victory.”

Furyk was named captain of the 2024 US President’s Cup team by the PGA TOUR on May 2.
