A new alliance for industry stalwarts

Well known industry stalwarts, Bob Smith and David Wells, have combined their knowledge base to form a new company, Wellsmith Ltd, primarily to handle the sales and distribution of the Peter Millar range of apparel.
The US based Peter Millar range has been established in the UK and Ireland for a couple of seasons and is already a priority stock line in a host of high profile green grass and resort outlets including Kingsbarns, Wentworth, Royal St Georges, Loch Lomond and Ballybunnion. Wellsmith secured the distribution rights in the UK, Europe and other important International markets at the 2006 PGA Show in Orlando and it is their intention to develop these markets carefully in close partnership with its customers.
Peter Millar, often described as ‘the upstart apparel brand of affordable luxury’, began as a cashmere sweater company only four years ago. The luxury goods manufacturer gradually expanded into sportswear by selling shirts to golf resorts and pro shops. The company, which is pushing $10 million of sales, was really making waves by becoming key suppliers to Seminole, Pebble Beach, Pine Valley, National Golf Links, Oakmont, and Cypress Point. The famed historic Sea Island Resort Company, off the coast of Georgia, recently acquired the Peter Millar Company. For Peter Millar, a fictitious persona created to represent a brand that connotes traditional luxury, the backing by Sea Island gives it the financing to fuel its fast growth focusing on high – end golf apparel.
Says Bob Smith, “This is an exciting and dynamic range yet has all the classic style qualities. The colour offerings are fresh and extensive and the style choice is so wide that no two retail offerings need be the same. This gives an almost bespoke feel to the brand. Our Spring 2006 range has sold in very well and will be in shops shortly and our current pre orders for Autumn 2006 are exceeding our expectations.”
Joining Bob Smith in this venture is David Wells who was a prime mover in establishing PowaKaddy as a world brand leader. Wells says, “I see this brand and range of products as a real opportunity for growth in the competitive apparel sector. The products themselves are not only beautifully made but they offer something quite different yet classical to the consumer. Moreover the opportunity for the retailers is enormous due to the value pricing and margin expectations. High quality products with a vast choice of range do not emerge very often; this is why the Peter Millar brand is so very attractive.”
