Tour validation process in play for new Titleist Pro V1 golf balls

Titleist has begun the tour validation phase for its next generation of Pro V1 and Pro V1x golf balls, ahead of their anticipated consumer launch in 2027.

The models were introduced at last week’s Baycurrent Classic at Yokohama Country Club in Japan, starting a programme that will give professionals across the world’s tours the opportunity to assess the balls under tournament conditions over the coming months.

The rollout represents a key stage in Titleist’s multi-year development process and follows testing with leading players since March. The new models will be the 15th generation of Pro V1 and the 13th generation of Pro V1x.

Fordie Pitts, Titleist’s Director of Tour Research & Validation, said: “Everything we do is driven by the desire to better understand player needs and translate those insights into meaningful performance improvements.”

Testing of final versions of the new balls began at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, where Adam Scott, Ryan Gerard, Jordan Spieth and Harris English provided feedback to Titleist representatives after every shot during Tuesday practice rounds.

Justin Thomas, Lottie Woad, Matt Fitzpatrick, Yana Wilson and Viktor Hovland subsequently took part in the same process, helping the company assess performance across a range of players.

Four professionals have already put the 2027 models into competition at the Biltmore Championship Asheville, the opening event of the PGA Tour’s FedExCup Fall season. Among them was Neal Shipley, who switched to the new Pro V1 and recorded his career-best PGA Tour round, a second-round 62, before finishing tied third, also his best result on the circuit.

“When we’re in the middle of a testing session and a player asks me how soon he can play the new ball, I know we’re onto something,” Pitts said. “That’s how it’s been the last couple months.”

The launch will update a product franchise with substantial tour visibility. According to Titleist, more than 70% of PGA Tour players choose its golf balls, while Pro V1 and Pro V1x have been used to win more than 110 men’s and women’s major championships.

Titleist’s golf ball research and development operation comprises more than 75 associates, covering disciplines including aerodynamics, engineering, materials research and analytical chemistry.

The company has yet to disclose key technology changes, retail pricing or a confirmed consumer release date.
