Rory McIlroy is adding significant elements of his own personality and creativity to the Nike Lunar Control 4 shoes that will provide the perfect platform for his assault on golf’s first Major Championship of 2016.
Nike athlete McIlroy – already a four-time Major champion – will sport a quartet of NikeiD distinct designs over the four days of tournament play, and the LC4 is now fully customizable on the iD tool for golfers across the UK and Europe too.
Modern golf athletes can add their name or a personal message on the inner tongue of the shoe and are also invited to select an inspiring colour for the upper, and then top with a reptile print. Finally, fans can add a metallic accent colour to a number of parts of the shoe, including the laces, Flywire and iconic Swoosh, which, in the case of the LC4, is located on the vamp.
“NikeiD is the perfect way to showcase your own individuality and creativity on the course,” said Sander van Rijn, Nike Golf Merchandising Director for Footwear in Western Europe.
“NikeiD has long been available across other product categories within the Nike family, and naturally golfers who identify with the Swoosh wanted to have that opportunity too,” he added.
McIlroy’s tilt at glory this week will rely on a number of key factors, including his ability to control the golf ball off the tee. At more than 120 MPH, his swing is one of the most powerful in the sport today. His ability to attack the ball with velocity while maintaining control over his swing arc requires strength and a strong base. When it all comes together, McIlroy declares, he’s able to “swing within himself.” This insight played a major role in the development of the Nike Lunar Control 4, which is designed to provide that ultimate base.
The Nike Lunar Control 4 leverages Nike innovations, developed across a variety of sport platforms, to meet the needs of golf athletes at every level of the game. Dynamic Nike Flywire technology provides lateral support in the midfoot, while a new, robust external heel counter helps lock the foot in place through McIlroy’s swing. The upper is reengineered of a lightweight microfiber that provides a soft, unrestricted feel. The tongue has been redesigned to wrap ergonomically around the ankle and provide a natural break when walking. The athletic design of the Nike Lunar Control 4 is highlighted by a Swoosh logo design on the vamp, an iconic aesthetic most familiar in the Nike Mercurial football boot.
In addition to the NikeiD LC4s, McIlroy will sport the Momentum Swing Knit Blade Polo on Thursday and Sunday, and will don the Momentum Swing Knit Block Polo on Friday and Saturday. The polos are constructed from Dri-FIT fabric for freedom of movement and ultimate comfort. McIlroy will also be able to rely on the warmth of the Range Sweater Crew during all four days, should the temperature in Georgia plummet.
