A single early-summer application of Scotts Professional’s Praxys turf herbicide was all that was needed to control a range of stubborn broad-leaved weeds affecting tees, fairways and semi-rough at The Island Golf Club, Donabate, Co Dublin, Ireland last year.
Specified by course superintendent, Johnny O’Sullivan, following advice from Peter Callaghan of NAD Limited, Scotts’ local distributor, Praxys is a systemic, post-emergence turf herbicide combining three powerful active ingredients – Florasulam, Fluroxypyr and Clopyralid – which provide rapid plant entry and a complete kill right down to the roots. Rainfast within an hour, Praxys has no LERAP restrictions, making it safe for use alongside water courses, lakes and drainage channels.
Delivered to the course in late May 2010, Praxys was applied immediately by tractor-mounted sprayer to all of the club’s off-green turf areas at the recommended dose rate of 1.5 litres per hectare mixed in 200 litres of water.
“And that was it for the year,” commented Johnny. “The treatment did exactly what it says on the label and dealt effectively with daisies, red and white clover and a number of other difficult weeds such as dandelion, trefoil and greater plantain. Once gone, the weeds did not re-appear.”
Established in 1890 and regarded as one of Ireland’s finest championship links courses, The Island Golf Club is situated to the north-east of Dublin, less than 15 miles from the city centre.
Johnny O’Sullivan pointed out that the course’s sea-side location on the east coast of Ireland made it susceptible to weed seeds blown in from nearby countryside on the prevailing south-westerly winds.
“In previous years, we have had to spray against broad-leaved weeds normally twice a year, once in the spring and again in mid summer,” he said. “By using Praxys, we not only achieved a complete kill in one very low dose treatment but we saved time and cost for the benefit of the club and its members. The product did everything asked of it and I shall definitely be using it again this year, if and when it becomes necessary.”
Praxys is available in 5 litre bottles from Scotts distributors. To locate your nearest distributor, visit www.scottsprofessional.co.uk.
