Earlier this month visitors to SALTEX were the first to get a chance to run their eye over Toro’s new Reelmaster 3550-D, which was shown on the ‘Lely – Partners in Turfcare’ stand.

Weighing in at just 900kgs – an impressive 15 to 20 percent lighter than comparable models – Toro claim it’s the lightest fairway mower on the market, floating effortlessly over contours. So while it makes a big impression, it won’t leave one! It also means this machine – dubbed the new lightweight fairway champion by Toro – is not only kind to turf, but also more fuel-efficient and cheaper to run.

Toro has combined the mower’s lightweight build with smooth, turf-friendly tyres, a generous 208cm (82in) cutting width and a proven power unit. This all adds up to a machine that is turf friendly, highly productive and big on performance.

Ideal for links and heathland courses, the 3550-D’s cutting width is complemented by a 7mph (11kmph) mowing speed for fast and effective cutting. While a kit to increase the height of cut makes this mower equally at home on sports surfaces, too.

The new Reelmaster’s performance is based on that of the popular and proven Groundsmaster 3500-D power unit. Powered by a 25hp (18.5kW) Kubota diesel engine, the 3550-D has the oomph to climb hills, even while running groomers and rear roller brushes. Better still, a patented Series/Parallel three-wheel-drive system provides power to at least two wheels at all times for superior traction. The result is improved grip even in hilly and wet conditions, plus minimal wheel slip so the mower remains gentle to turf.

The 3550-D also benefits from improved ground-following performance, provided by a new 46cm (18in) version of Toro’s renowned Dual Precision Adjustment (DPA) cutting units fitted as standard. These units better handle fairway undulations, ensuring that each blade of grass is cut cleanly – not torn – to keep the sward green and healthy.

Optional 56cm (22in) rear cutting units can also be installed to achieve additional overlap if required.

Additional benefits include a quiet performance, and easy on-off grass boxes. Operators will also appreciate the comfortable seat and conveniently located controls.

A large selection of other Toro golf and fine turf equipment was also shown at the show including the company’s latest ‘green’ technology mowers such as the Greensmaster eFlex 21 pedestrian unit, which boasts the industry’s first lithium-ion battery power source, and the Greensmaster TriFlex 3420 Hybrid riding greens machine that features electrically-driven cutting units.
