Abacus Sportswear, the Swedish technical clothing brand and pioneer of high-performance stretch waterproof fabrics, has introduced Bamboo Charcoal fabric technology to its collections.

The fabric is regarded for its sustainable properties, with a bamboo forest taking between four and five years to regrow, while a tree forest can take up to 60 years.

Bamboo Charcoal®, combined with micro polyester, produces efficient moisture wicking fabric that keeps the wearer dry and cool while providing UV-protection, as well as preventing bacteria growth and reducing unpleasant odours.

Referred to as “the Black Diamond” in the Japanese and Southeast Asian fashion industries, Bamboo Charcoal is created by heating bamboo at temperatures of 800 degrees. The charcoal itself is then processed and mixed in with fibres to create soft, technical fabric.

Chris Mattsson, designer at Abacus Sportswear said: “In addition to its key technical benefits, due to the bamboo charcoal particles being embedded in the fabric rather than simply coated onto its surface, the fabric can be washed numerous times with no adverse effect on the charcoal qualities.”

Bamboo Charcoal combines with micro polyester to create a comfortable, protective garment for golfers during the warmer months.

Abacus Sportswear is an Official Supplier to The European Tour, The Asian Tour and The European Solheim Cup Team, as well as an Official Licensee of The 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles. It supplies elite amateur golfers and national teams, and is a partner of England Golf, Deutscher Golf Verband, Dansk Golf Union and Norges Golfforbund.
