This month sees the launch of a new quarterly magazine dedicated to the business of golf course design and modification. “Golf Course Architecture” has been welcomed by the European Institute of Golf Course Architects as a platform to inform a wider public on a variety of subjects, including the development of sustainable golf, new technology and its effect on the game, the renovation of older courses and water conservation.
With an editorial panel of eighteen respected golf course architects and industry leaders, the magazine aims to provide content that is “compelling, relevant and accurate,” says Adam Lawrence, the editor. “Whether you are a golf architect, a developer, a club official or a golfer with an interest in course design, I trust that you’ll find something to engage you.”
The six primary sponsors of the first edition are Carrick Design, DMK Golf Design, Faldo Design, Hawtree Ltd, Kyle Phillips and Robert Trent Jones. The magazine takes an in-depth look at the architecture of St Andrews, including the alterations made to the Old Course for this year’s Open, and a preview of the exciting new seventh course.
There is a comprehensive discussion of what makes for great short par fours. Bruce Critchley of Sky Sports and course architect Martin Hawtree comment on the genius of Harry Colt, the standard-bearer for the UK’s inland courses. There are profiles of new courses, recently opened or in development, across Europe and the Middle East.
Geoff Shackelford contributes an article on the impact of new technology on course design, Committed to Green’s Jonathan Smith writes on architecture and ecology, and there is a column from Nick Faldo on great opening holes.
The magazine is launched with a 4 for 3 subscription promotion, offering delivery of four issues for just £14.95 in the UK, £20.85 in Europe and £26.85 in the rest of the world.
