Golf on The Edge

Tales from the European Tour Q School and the fascinating trials and tribulations of the journeyman pro are featured together for the first time in a new book published today.

“Golf On The Edge: Triumphs & Tragedies of Q School” is written by Ross Biddiscombe and tells the story of seven pros battling to fulfill their dream of a regular place on the European Tour. It is the first sports book to focus in-depth on European Tour Q School players and their lives.

Sportswriter Biddiscombe followed the seven players closely for almost two years and interviewed more than 150 golfers, caddies, family members, pundits, agents and golfing officials to compile this unique story.

“The Q School is one of the least-known tournaments among golf fans and yet there is more drama, more sadness and tears, more unbridled elation in this one event than any other golf tournament in Europe,” says Biddiscombe. “Q School is where a golfer’s whole livelihood is at stake; there is no next week if you fail and that failure could be the end of your career.”

The seven featured players – Welshman Sion Bebb; England’s James Conteh, Phil Golding, Andy Raitt, Guy Woodman and Martyn Thompson; and Scotland’s Euan Little – have all lived the life of the tournament professional whose season revolves around success at the Q School each autumn.

“Q School is probably the most nerve-wracking tournament most pro golfers will experience. I’m pleased that some of us finally have the chance to tell golf fans what an amazing event it is and what lives are like for those of us who play there,” says Euan.

The book focuses on the 2006 and 2007 Q Schools and the 12 months between the tournaments; it outlines the trials and tribulations of the seven players – and many others – in a unique insight into professional golf.

“Golf On The Edge: Triumphs & Tragedies of Q School” by Ross Biddiscombe is published in hardback by Ultimate Sports Publications and is available from today, 5th June, in all good bookstores and online. The recommended sale price is £15.00.
