Oceantee congratulates winners of England Golf Sustainability Award ahead of Global Recycling Day

OCEANTEE, sponsor of the Sustainability Project of the Year Award at the 2023 England Golf Awards, has praised the efforts of Bigbury Golf Club, winner of this year’s award, along with all other golf clubs in the UK that are implementing environmental policies that are having a positive impact in their communities.

The Devonshire club earned the award for a wide variety of sustainability measures, including working with Devon Contract Waste which has a ‘zero to landfill’ policy and helps divert in excess of 35,000 tonnes per annum away from landfill each year. It also undertook re-wilding projects with the Devon Wildlife Trust, installed bat boxes and set out a five-year tree management plan. When it comes to its golf course, the club has reduced chemical consumption by 55% over the last five years and has also introduced waterless urinals, with an estimated saving of 100,000 litres of water a year.

The club has painted over 900 saplings on the golf course as part of a five-year tree management programme

“Recycling is an integral part of the climate change cycle and helps in promoting and protecting global sustainability,” said OCEANTEE Ed Sandison, ahead of Global Recycling Day, which is taking place on March 18. “Clubs like Bigbury are incredibly inspiring. They have understood that even making small changes, like switching suppliers, can have a huge impact which is why we are celebrating their win. I am delighted to be able to use our platform to share their story and encourage other golf clubs to make positive changes.”

After picking up their award, the representatives of Bigbury GC said: “This award will make such a massive difference for a small golf club like ours. We’ve worked tremendously hard to improve our work in the sustainability area over the last 12 months and it’s a deserved reward for everyone at the club who works so hard day in and day out. We know that we all have to play our part if we are to make the world a more sustainable place and we want to play a small part at Bigbury Golf Club by making small changes which hopefully make a big difference!”

Recycling is projected to save over one billion tonnes of CO2 emissions by 2030. OCEANTEE continues to use recycled ocean waste across its product range, including the innovative Pacific Cap collection each of which is made from three recycled plastic bottles. For complete transparency, the QR code in the back of each cap shows where the waste was collected and the journey it took to be recycled into fabric.
