Popular Competition For Young Golfers Hits New Heights

The Northern Junior Golf Tour – which was established in 2009 and has already involved more than 5,000 players – hosted a record-breaking round this month.

The Tour – in association with PING – visited Hurlston Hall in Lancashire when 155 players teed up at the Ormskirk course.

Founder and tournament organiser Jason Budd said: “We launched the Tour in 2009 to provide fun and competitive opportunities for young golfers to get involved in the sport, make new friends and play on different courses.

“They are open to everyone from newcomers to the sport or the more experienced junior player with a low handicap.

“Our events are professionally organised with, for example, a live leaderboard and support from PING making it a great day out for all involved.

“It was a pleasure to welcome the players and their families to Hurlston Hall, our biggest entry for a single event.”

Sadly the big day was hit by another first when thunderstorms forced an early finish.

“Unfortunately the weather got the better of us on the day, but the safety of the players was paramount,” added Jason.

The under-18 and under-16 sections were completed with Harvey Barber (Royal Lytham GC) winning best gross and nett in the U18, while at U16 Ross Ganson (Longridge) won the gross section and Theo Rowland Pidd (Hurlston Hall) the nett.

The under-14 boys and girls, along with the under-18 girls, were reduced to nine holes. The winners were: Thomas Suggitt (Bishop Auckland) (U14 Gross); Lewis Forsyth (Hillside) (U14 Nett); Amelia Temperley (Morpeth) (U14 Gross); Ella Wilson (Royal Lytham) (U14 Nett); Rebecca Wildey (Eden) (U18 Gross); Maisie Greenhalgh (Preston) (U18 Nett)

The Tour offers a great day out for both newcomers and more established players with competitive opportunities available over 9 and 18 holes with adapted rules for beginners. Prizes are available at each event for the best gross and nett scores, while the top finishers in the season-wide Order of Merit qualify for a Grand Final place at Thonock Park in Lincolnshire.
