Junior golfers have enjoyed the biggest ever PING Welsh Junior Tour event, with record entries at Llanishen Golf Club in Cardiff. There were 123 players from the ages of Under 8’s through to Under 18’s, including 22 girls.

There was a home winner of the Under 18 Girls event, with Poppy Murphy Jones of Llanishen leading the way in the net scoring, while Lucy Hurst of St Idloes had the best gross score.

Radyr’s Flynn Lambly had the best gross in the Under 18 Boys, while clubmate Rhys Eveleigh had the best net score.

The Under 14 Boys saw a Whitchurch one-two, with Ben Latham seeing off the challenge of Hugo Pearson, Llanishen’s Dylan Rutter in third. Pennard’s Molly Maclean had the best stableford score in the Under 14 Girls, with Esme Matthews of Swansea Bay in second place.

Swansea Bay’s Ella Evans came out on top in the Under 12 Girls with an impressive 48 points, with Madison Boucher of Pennard/Langland Bay in second. In the Under 12 Boys, Jac Rate made the journey from North Wales worthwhile as the Wrexham player edged out St Pierre’s George Benitez on countback.

The Under 10 Boys was won by Taio-Blake Burkitt, Celtic Manor, with Fraizer Harris, Bryn Meadows, in second. Olivia-Rae Dally came out on top in the Under 10 Girls with Radyr’s Annabelle Lewis in second.  The Under 8 Boys was won by Matthew Maclean on Pennard to make it a successful day for the family.

“The numbers for the PING Welsh Junior Tour event in Llanishen were tremendous, it made the day very busy – but rewarding,” said Wales Golf Competitions Co-Ordinator Rebecca Hawke. “Everyone had fun, with well over 100 players taking part, while there was also some seriously competitive golf being played with a high standard on display.

“It was particularly encouraging with almost one in five of the entrants being girls. Of course, there is a big push on women and girls golf with the AIG Women’s Open coming to Royal Porthcawl this summer, the biggest female sporting event ever held in Wales.

“We could not have managed such a big turnout without the staff and volunteers at Llanishen, who played such a big part in making the event the success it was.”
