Parliamentary Golf Group to launch National Golf Month 2016

2.30pm 4th March 2016 - Growing the Game

National Golf Month 350x250The Houses of Parliament will launch May’s National Golf Month with a chipping/putting competition in the Palace of Westminster for MPs, Peers and schoolchildren. The launch, taking place on 27th April, will take in eight other iconic locations in London to promote golf and the importance of the sport to the UK’s health and economy.

Operated through Parliament’s All-Party Group for Golf, the official body responsible for “promoting the sport of golf”, the day will also provide the opportunity for MPs to learn more about the sport in their constituencies from the likes of The R&A and the golf unions from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland (which includes Northern Ireland).

The Group’s Chairman is Lincoln MP Karl McCartney. Anticipating the day, he said “The Parliamentary Group for Golf has a singular remit to support the sport. We encourage Members of Parliament to learn more about the sport and its importance to the nation’s health and wellbeing, and understand that golf, as one of the largest sports in the UK and with thousands of clubs, is of vital importance to the local, regional and national economies.”

National Golf Month is a BGIA (British Golf Industry Association) initiative.

Their former Chairman and Director of National Golf Month, Doug Poole said, “We’re delighted to be launching National Golf Month in the Palace of Westminster and are grateful to the Parliamentary Golf Group for making this possible. Whilst many Members of Parliament recognise how important golf is to the UK, we welcome the opportunity to make even more aware and introduce them to clubs and the wider golf industry in their constituencies.”

The R&A is one of the supporters of the Group; their CEO Martin Slumbers added “I am very much looking forward to National Golf Month and the opportunities it provides to showcase the sport. To launch in the Houses of Parliament is welcome and important as a means to promote the game and I am sure the home unions will take full advantage.”

National Golf Month will kick off in May of this year with support from hundreds of golfing organisations, brands, clubs and associations offering deals and experiences throughout the month.

Any golf club or professional who signs up to the campaign before 31st March will go into a prize draw to win a ‘PING Customer Experience’.
