Female entries help Berkhamsted Trophy to smash 63-year record

9.40am 9th March 2022 - Growing the Game

A 63-year old record has been smashed with over 220 entries received to date for the 61st Berkhamsted Trophy (March 31 – April 02). And organisers are calling for more plus-figure female golfers to enter.

With an entry deadline of noon on Thursday March 17, there is still time to enter the gender-neutral tournament.

With World Amateur Golf Ranking points on offer for both men and women, and with such a large entry, the ballot is likely to fall well inside the +1 mark.

Entry numbers have never surpassed 200 since the Berkhamsted Trophy started in 1960.

“2022 will be our strongest field ever. This is an emphatic endorsement of our decision to open the Trophy up to female golfers for the first time” said Berkhamsted’s Club Manager, Howard Craft. “We hope that more elite female competitors will get in touch this week and join their peers in one of England’s most historic amateur golf events.”

As is the event’s tradition the defending champion, England’s Joss Gosling, will be the first to tee off on Day One. Club officials took advice from ex-GB&I Walker Cup Captain Peter McEvoy OBE, GB&I Curtis Cup Captain Elaine Ratcliffe, and Tour golfer Alice Hewson when planning the tees for the event.

The 72-hole event traditionally takes place at Berkhamsted, one of Europe’s most prominent ‘bunker-free’ golf courses. Its challenging heathland layout is rated by multiple assessors as being among England’s Top 100 golf courses.
