Following a weekend report that Wentworth Club members would be asked to pay significantly increased fees in future a report in this morning’s online edition of ‘The Financial Times’ confirms that the speculation was well-founded.

In fact the ‘debenture’ which existing members will be invited to purchase will cost £100,000, rather than the previously-reported £80,000, with new members being asked for £125,000. Subscriptions will be £16,000 per year.

Yesterday, when GBN.com asked Wentworth Club for a statement on the new Membership Structure, we were told, “The pricing of our membership is a private Wentworth Club matter. We will be discussing our new membership categories including prices directly with our members.”

This morning, informed sources have told us that the members at last night’s annual meeting were astonished to learn the new prices, with at least one person questioning whether the word ‘debenture’ was an accurate description of what is being offered. We have also been told that the new membership is being offered for the full package of golf, tennis and other leisure facilities and that section memberships will no longer be available. The Club’s press release about its huge investment in new facilities, which we reported yesterday, described the new membership structure as being ‘family-based’.

Existing members will be invited to express interest in taking up the new deal, which comes into effect from 1st April 2017, with their applications being considered by a committee whose membership has not been announced.

According to The FT the new memberships will be sold ‘by invitation’.
