New Hotel for Mere

12.58am 18th March 2009 - Course Development

Mere Golf and Country Club in Cheshire has announced that it has been granted planning permission to build an 86 bedroom hotel together with a new leisure and health facility at the Club.

The announcement is the culmination of many years hard work for Mere owner Mark Boler and his management team. Macclesfield Borough’s Planning Committee resolved to approve the application in December last year and the application has now been approved following referral to the Government Office for the North West who decided against calling it in for a Public Inquiry.

The development, which is located within the North Cheshire green belt, will see the hotel built alongside the existing club premises. Also included is the conversion of the Grade II Listed Stable Block Building at the Club, which will give members enhanced leisure club facilities and a state of the art health club and spa. The agreed development also ensures improvements to the club’s egress to the A556.

The announcement coincides with a very important year for the prestigious club as it celebrates its 75th Anniversary during 2009. Mark Boler who coincidently is the club’s Captain this year said, “I am delighted with this news as it safeguards the long term viability of our club for future generations. During past years we have been disadvantaged by other corporate golf providers who have had the benefit of overnight accommodation on their premises. This puts us on a level playing field. We will very soon be able to offer our members and guests the very best facilities that a modern day Golf and Country Club can provide.”

Kevin Barker, managing director of Mere Golf and Country Club added, “This is terrific news for tourism in the North West and the local community in Knutsford and the surrounding areas. The facilities we will now be able to offer will be second to none. Our anniversary year has certainly kicked off with a bang and this announcement is testimony to that. On 24th June this year we have the Open Qualifier here and with all the other Anniversary events and celebrations planned we are in for a bumper time.”

Construction work will commence in the autumn this year.
