Matfen Hall lights up for late night opening

11.41am 25th October 2019 - Course Development

Golfers at Matfen Hall Golf Club in Newcastle can now perfect their swing after the sun goes down, following the installation of floodlights across the driving range.

Sports stars and Matfen members Olympic Gold medallist Jonathan Edwards, Newcastle United footballer Paul Dummett and European Tour winner Kenneth Ferrie all enjoyed taking the first swing at the new opening hours after the new lights were switched on at the popular Northumberland club.

They were joined by around 50 club members who were keen to be among the first to drive after dark, as well as club pro John Harrison, who joined forces with Ferrie to hold a golf clinic as part of the evening’s proceedings.

The new floodlit driving range, which was made possibly after a £5,000 investment, will enable the club to stay open until 8pm during the winter months (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to begin with) for both driving range practice and lessons.

Harrison said: “As a teaching professional it is great to be able to give my clients the opportunity to continue their lessons throughout the winter and provide a facility for them to practice away from their one to one lessons.”

Ferrie added: “It is good to see Matfen adding to their golf offering, with the par 3 and now longer opening hours on the range there is no reason not to practice!”

Paul Dummett agreed. He said: “I think it is great that I can practice my golf at any time especially now the dark nights are here.”

Lisa Ferrie, Matfen Hall’s director of golf, and wife of Kenneth, said the investment and late night opening of the driving range was part of Matfen Hall’s ongoing commitment to give members the best experience possible. “We are hoping that the addition of the late night opening of the driving range will enable our professionals to deliver more lessons and our members and visitors to be able to practice during the winter months. We have been delighted with the positive response from members and are confident they will be taking full advantage of our extended opening hours.”
