First Irish course for PGA ETC

7.50am 2nd October 2006 - Course Development

PGA European Tour Courses has announced that Macreddin Golf Club, Co. Wicklow, featuring the new 18-hole course designed by Ryder Cup star Paul McGinley, is to become a member of Europe’s premier group of championship golf venues.
Macreddin Golf Club is the first course designed by McGinley and has been produced in conjunction with Roger Jones, of Roger Jones Golf Design. Set in a valley designated an area of outstanding natural beauty and featuring holes lined by mature birch and spruce trees, the 7,173-yard, par-72 course will be one of the most natural and visually appealing new layouts in Europe.
McGinley, recently returned from the K Club, said, “Becoming a member of PGA European Tour Courses is excellent news for Macreddin Golf Club. I am very proud that the course I have designed is to be associated with some of Europe’s best championship venues and with such a prestigious group.”
David MacLaren, chief executive of PGA European Tour Courses, said, “Macreddin is an outstanding new golf club and the first course in Ireland to become a member of the PGA European Tour Courses’ portfolio of championship golf venues.
“Paul McGinley has designed a distinctive course, full of character, in an idyllic setting and combined with the stylish, contemporary clubhouse and established country house hotel, Macreddin Golf Club is set to become one of the finest golfing destinations in Ireland.”
Macreddin Golf Club will open for play in 2007 and is the final part of the €60 million development that is Macreddin Village. Located 50 minutes south of Dublin and nestled in 200 acres of County Wicklow countryside, Macreddin Village includes The BrookLodge Hotel and Wells Spa, The Strawberry Tree – Ireland’s only certified organic restaurant, and Acton’s Pub and Brewery.
The PGA ETC Group currently owns three celebrated international golf venues – Quinta do Lago, Portugal, PGA Golf de Catalunya, Spain, and Kungsà¤ngen Golf Club, Sweden – and licenses its brand to four others: Golf & Country Club Fleesensee, Germany, Linna Golf, Finland, Miklagard Golf, Norway, and Estonian Golf & Country Club, Estonia. It also offers specialist consultancy services and advice on the strategic, financial, technical and operational elements of successfully managing a championship golf venue business.
Pat Galavan, chairman of Macreddin Golf Club, said, “We are delighted to be involved with such a prestigious golf group as PGA European Tour Courses. Between Paul McGinley and ourselves we are aiming to create one of the best golf courses in the country that will appeal to and challenge all players of the game.”
Eoin Doyle, sales and marketing director of Brooklodge Hotel and Wells Spa, said, “PGA European Tour Courses are renowned for their quality resorts, such as Quinta do Lago in Portugal. These are the type of developments that set the benchmark in Europe and we feel that something very special is being built down here in Macreddin Village and the association with PGA European Tour Courses only further highlights the standards which this development is aiming to set.”
