Doak to design ‘Valderamma II’ in Sotogrande

12.41pm 21st August 2023 - Course Development

La Zagaleta has commissioned Tom Doak to design a new championship golf course in the Sotogrande area of Spain.

The project – historically known as Valderrama II – already has all the planning permits in place to begin construction and will be Doak’s first design in Spain and the second in Continental Europe.

The Majarambuz Club will be located within a parcel of land to the east of Real Club Valderrama and San Roque Club and to the north of La Hacienda Links. The owners are aiming for it to be one of the most exclusive in Europe, with membership by invitation only, which will be limited to around 300. Access to the course will be limited to members and their guests, and users of the resort’s hotel and branded residences, which will be part of the development.

The plans for the second course at Valderrama were first proposed by the club’s original owner, Jaime Ortíz Patiño, as far back as 2007. Patiño died in 2013 with the project having not been progressed. La Zagaleta Ltd, which also owns the 36-hole La Zagaleta club near Marbella, bought the Valderrama Group in 2015 and subsequently sold Real Club Valderrama to the membership, while continuing to develop the Valderrama II project.

The development, parts of which could open was early as next year, will include one or two championship golf courses, a luxury hotel, rental accomodation, private residences, and a world class equestrian centre.
