Berkhamsted Golf Club have recently taken delivery of their second Jacobsen Eclipse 322 hybrid greens mower from local dealer Ernest Doe & Sons Ltd.

The club, located on Berkhamsted Common in west Hertfordshire, sits within the Chiltern valley and surrounding hills. The golf course is traditional heathland with abundant heather and gorse and features grassy mounds and hollows, which take the place of more traditional sand-filled bunkers.

Course Manager Gerald Bruce began his career at Hunstanton Golf club in 1982 under the supervision of then head greenkeeper Jim Read, before moving to his current role in 1986.

Gerald’s decision to purchase his second Eclipse 322 was relatively easy as he has been using Jacobsen greens mowers for the last 30 years.

Commenting he said, “The Eclipse is an excellent greens mower with some fantastic features. The ability to set frequency of cut, mow speed and transport speed, plus the swing out centre unit and general ease of use are all good points, but the one thing that sets Jacobsen apart from the competition is the quality of cut. The cutting units are second to none and having used them for 30 years I know how good they are. These, coupled with the latest technology power unit, makes for an excellent greens mower”.

Support for the product was also a factor for Gerald and he added, “Ernest Doe and Jacobsen give us excellent back up and support when I need it. Parts support is good and these points all influenced my decision to purchase the second Eclipse.”

Berkhamsted was founded in 1891 and is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year. The club is widely known for its annual 36-hole open amateur scratch event, The Berkhamsted Trophy, which attracts the country’s leading amateurs with past winners including Sandy Lyle, Luke Donald and Tom Lewis. This competition has been played for over 50 years and demonstrates that Berhamsted offers a good test of golf to players of all levels.

“With the club is celebrating such a huge milestone this season, it is important we continue to invest in the latest machinery to ensure we maintain our reputation and continue to satisfy the needs of today’s golfer,” Gerald concluded.
