The John Letters Golf Academy at Cambridge Golf & Conference Centre has been awarded ‘Get Into Golf Centre’ status – attained only by venues which support and co-operate with the county golf development scheme.

As a consequence of the academy offering free adult coaching and affordable group classes on a monthly basis, it will now be featured on the national ‘Get Into Golf’ website – a national campaign to inspire people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to take up the game, which is run by England Golf, with the support of Sport England.

The Huntingdon venue, one of five John Letters Golf Academies in England, officially received its new status during a recent visit by Cambridgeshire County Golf development officer Marc Smith.

He explained: “The John Letters Golf Academy has been recognised as offering regular, low-cost beginner and introductory golf sessions with experienced PGA professionals. We look to encourage people to visit our ‘Get Into Golf’ website, so we can direct them to somebody we consider a trusted partner, like the John Letters Golf Academy.

“The latest figures show that golf participation in the east of the country is increasing, so it suggests ‘Get Into Golf’ is working. But, there is a long way to go to get even more people playing the sport.”

Academy director Darren Scholes said: “We are delighted to be recognised by the county in this way. And through this initiative we will continue to help grow the game and to sign new golfers up for beginner courses. Hopefully, we will be able to give them something they can enjoy for life.”

Scholes and fellow academy director Ian Cochrane provide a wide variety of learning opportunities at the 38-bay floodlit driving range, from group classes for all levels, junior academy sessions and group beginner courses, through to one-to-one sessions, slow-motion video analysis and structured personal practice plans and drills.

Scotland’s finest club-maker, John Letters, has been producing clubs for nearly a century, and many prestigious golfers have used the brand, including former Open champions Fred Daly, Paul Lawrie, Lee Trevino and Gary Player, Ryder Cup captains Dai Rees, Sam Torrance and Bernard Gallacher, and the 2013 European Senior Tour order-of-merit winner, Paul Wesselingh.
