More than £4,000 was raised for Cancer Research UK after a trio of Direct Golf fundraisers, led by owner John Andrew, completed yesterday’s 35th London Marathon.
Andrew, 47, a fellow of the PGA, was joined by Tom Calvert, 22, a sales advisor at the company’s Stadium store in Huddersfield, and Grahame Page, 59, the director of Second Hand Golf Clubs, with all three among the 37,675 who crossed the finish line in the Mall.
It was Andrew’s second London Marathon and he made it home in an impressive 3 hours 42 minutes to finish 8,701st – in the top 25 per cent of finishers. Calvert was the second home of the Yorkshire company’s trio in 4.34 (22,847), while Page recorded a time of 5.03 (29,355).
In addition to their sponsorship money, the funds were supplemented by the award-winning retailer’s ‘Round to a Pound’ campaign, which encouraged customers to increase their spend to the nearest pound, in any of the company’s 21 stores or via the award winning website, with the difference being added to the Cancer Research donation.
Andrew said: “It was a great experience, in perfect running weather and I’m so proud that the three Direct Golf representatives made it to the end. The crowds came out in force, again, and helped spur us on. It’s a really inspiring – and humbling – race and is, I believe, the largest fundraiser in the world, which tells you an awful lot about the people who participate.
“So many good causes benefit hugely from the enormous efforts of normal people and we were so happy to be part of it and to raise money for our chosen charity, Cancer Research UK – with the latest figures stating that one in three people will develop cancer at some stage in their life, none of us are left untouched by this awful disease.”
