A solution for climate change

Barenbrug UK has launched a new mixture to help greenkeepers successfully respond to the challenges of climatic and environmental change. BAR 10 with RTF has been designed to provide users with a mixture that is capable of withstanding both drought and waterlogging together with unrivalled recovery and superior wear tolerance.
The mixture, available now, is a blend of RTF Rhizomatous Tall Fescue (Festuca arundinacea), tufted tall fescue and heat tolerant perennial ryegrass. To coincide with the launch Barenbrug has produced a brochure on RTF, which is available free from the company.
Barenbrug’s Jayne Leyland believes BAR 10 with RTF will be ‘the’ solution for overseeding from this autumn and beyond. “While coping with the drought issue has understandably been the priority this summer, we mustn’t forget that we suffer from other, equally damaging environmental pressures such as waterlogging, shade, disease, adverse temperatures etc. With BAR 10 with RTF we have a mixture that can tolerate whatever the weather and other environmental stresses throws at it.
“Our extensive trials, prior to launch, have demonstrated that this mixture has a wear tolerance similar to perennial ryegrass mixtures but importantly also has superior recovery thanks to its aggressive rhizomatous growth.
“The four members of the RTF Turf Group, who are accredited to grow RTF turf in the UK, have all been impressed with its amazing recovery after harvest. Its self-repairing capability and fast establishment are seen as key attributes. This season RTF has also shown how well it can cope with the drought, maintaining growth and colour even in the hottest and driest spells.”
RTF Rhizomatous Tall Fescue (Festuca arundinacea) is a remarkable species which, through its amazing rooting depth capability, can tolerate both drought and waterlogging. RTF increases this capability by producing underground stems (rhizomes), offering unrivalled recovery and tensile strength, plus the added benefit of incredibly fast establishment when laid as turf, which could be critical in terms of water conservation.
