The PGA of Iceland’s Training Programme for aspiring PGA professionals has been officially recognised by The PGAs of Europe’s Education Committee.
The certificate of recognition was handed over at the Annual Congress in Murcia, Spain recently and Agnar Már Jónsson, Managing Director of The PGA of Iceland, who received the award, said: “I want to thank The PGAs of Europe for their outstanding support. Without their help we would not have been able to get this far.”
The sentiment was echoed later back home when Jon Asgeir Eyjolfsson President of the Icelandic Golf Union commented: “The Icelandic Golf Union is very proud of this official recognition of The PGA of Iceland’s Educational Programme. “We have supported them in any way possible to achieve their goal because it is our belief that a strong partnership with the PGA is one of the cornerstones of improving the game of golf in Iceland. “
The PGA of Iceland was founded 1988 and has been part of The PGAs of Europe from the start. There are more than 60 golf courses in Iceland, fifteen 18 holes and 45 nine holes courses and, currently there are 49 PGA members and 11 trainees.
“We had a tough time before we started the programme,” he added. “With only seven qualified Pros working, too many players were teaching the game without any qualification. Now the PGA school has solved that problem and we are in much stronger position now. Through the work of setting up the programme we have moved to another level.
“The knowledge that we have collected has changed the quality of our PGA and as respect has grown, Icelandic golf has risen to another level.”
