Spain’s award-winning Costa Brava region, celebrating its ‘Year of Golf 2016’, which commemorates 50 years of golf in the region, is to welcome more than 70 tour operators and travel agents from 25 countries when it hosts the IAGTO Costa Brava Trophy, May 23-25.
Also coinciding with Costa Brava’s ‘Year of Wine & Gastronomy 2016’, the event will combine networking opportunities, destination briefings and workshops with a tournament at Spain’s no.1 course* and three-time Spanish Open venue, The Stadium Course at PGA Catalunya Resort, near Girona.
Pre and post-event familiarisation trips, organised by Costa Brava Tourism Board, will allow travel trade professionals to further experience this north-eastern region of Spain, its diverse golf courses, medieval towns and world-renowned gastronomy.
Attendees will have the opportunity to discover more of the region’s golfing gems, including European Top 100 ranked Empordà Golf, with its 36-hole layout and hotel complex, and Golf de Pals, also celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
Other courses included in the three-day itineraries include:
- Club de Golf Peralada, the region’s northern-most course
- Torremirona Golf Club, with stunning views of the Pyrenees
- Club de Golf Costa Brava, one of the region’s oldest courses
- Club Golf d’Aro Mas Nou, offering spectacular vistas 300m above sea-level
- Golf Girona, the only course in Spain sown entirely with Penncross grass
- Par 3 Gualta, perfect for those looking to perfect their short game.
Ramón Ramos, Director of the Costa Brava Girona Tourist Board, said: “To be chosen by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) to host its second Trophy event – especially in a year in which we are celebrating our own important milestones – is testament to the continued efforts of local businesses and organisations to promote Costa Brava as a leading international golf destination.
“The Trophy and fam trips will showcase just how much Costa Brava has evolved over the years, from the opening of the new high-speed rail link that now connects the region to Barcelona, Madrid and the rest of Europe, to the successful real estate developments that are bucking the economic trend and attracting numerous foreign investors.”
The familiarisation trips will also take in the regions of Costa Daurada and Barcelona, which complete the province of Catalonia.
