An innovative divot bag system is providing substantial labour and cost saving benefits in today’s increasingly competitive golf club market – and leaving greenkeepers free to concentrate on more pressing matters.
The Divot Bag Company has quickly established some 200 clients across the UK & Eire (including top 100 courses like The Island Club, Dublin and Pennard, Swansea) who encourage members to divot fill as they play and act alongside the green keeping team for the benefit of their club.
Director Nicola Morley explains: “There’s a lot of repeat business as divot repair is often last on the list of priorities for busy green keepers, who find it difficult to keep up with the increasing number of divots and the demand for ever improving playing conditions – which seems to be the overriding factor in choosing a club now – so everyone’s a winner really.”
One of her very first customers was South Staffordshire Golf Club, near Wolverhampton, and Course Manager, Craig Parry (who has worked at top courses at St Andrews) says: “It’s the job my team and I least look forward to and ever since they were introduced three years ago, I haven’t had to worry about it since. Our members have really embraced it and help keep the course in top class condition – and it saves us a weeks worth of labour time and costs per month. The fairway divot issue would be overwhelming without this system in place.
“We have them available on the first and 10th tees and the majority of members go out of their way to repair during a round, even advising us when the divot bag mix needs topping up. I’ve tried others, but nothing compares to the Divot Bag Company. The club still hosts a divoting party at the end of the season before winter sets in, for about 50 members with buckets, but if we didn’t have the divot bags we would need one monthly, which is just not feasible, so they help out immensely.”
Nicola’s bags measure nine by seven inches, are sized to hold enough divot mix (a mixture of soil, sand and seed) for a typical round of golf and are easily carried around on trolleys.
A club may order between 50 and 200 bags depending on the number of members/visitors. They come in a range of traditional and contemporary colours and can also be personalised with club logos or even sponsor’s details. The Divot Bag Company also supplies timber stands that can hold up to 64 bags.
