The Golf Foundation regained the Chesterfield Trophy on Monday (18 March), by a score of 3-2 points, in the annual match against the Association of Golf Writers (AGW).

The score was always going to be close between two well-matched teams. Despite wet overnight conditions after snow in the area, The Berkshire Golf Club’s Blue Course proved an excellent challenge, with players commenting on the high quality of the greens.

The Chesterfield Trophy was first contested in 1987 and the match serves as an opportunity for the Golf Foundation to thank the AGW and its members for the press coverage given to national grass roots junior golf.

AGW Captain and Editor of Golf Monthly Mike Harris said: “It was a close match and for a national charity the Golf Foundation team wasn’t that charitable on the course! This is always a match that the writers love to play in as we recognise the excellent job of the Golf Foundation in helping to bring on the next generation of golfers. Young players really are the future of the game.”

Golf Foundation team Captain and Chairman Charles Harrison said: “Through our school and club programmes we continue to make strong progress in helping to offer youngsters from all backgrounds the technical skills and also the life skills that golf is well-known for. We rely on golf writers and editors to help us to tell this story and, in turn, we really value their expert opinions on the development of the sport as a whole and the Golf Foundation’s role within the sport. This golf day is a great way to share ideas and we are very grateful to the AGW for their help.”

Both Charles Harrison and Mike Harris thanked the management and staff at The Berkshire for making all present feel so welcome in the clubhouse and on the course during the day.
