Justin Rose, the PGA European Tour player who sprang to fame by finishing fourth in the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale as an amateur in 1998, has agreed to support the English Golf Union’s Associate Membership Scheme and national drive to introduce more people to the game of golf. He has had a superb start to the 2001 season with back-to-back second place finishes in the first two events in South Africa.
Justin will promote a national advertising & marketing campaign to raise awareness of the Associate Membership scheme and his image will be used on posters, showcards and brochures to be displayed at golf clubs and ranges around England. The scheme will also be promoted in leisure centres and universities.
Prosimmon Golf (UK) Pty Limited, the sponsors of the EGU Associate Membership Scheme has agreed to continue its sponsorship for a third year. Prosimmon will have provided £60 000 over three years to help develop the game of golf at a grass roots level. The scheme has also been awarded Sportsmatch funding – a Government Business Sponsorship Incentive Scheme for Sport administered in England by the Institute of Sports Sponsorship (ISS).
The Associate Membership Scheme, developed in 1997, has now helped over 10,000 non golf club members by educating them on the rules and etiquette, providing access to golf clubs normally closed to the non golf club member and allowing them to gain recognition of their ability through an official EGU/ELGA Associate Membership handicap.
