Speedcut Contractors of Oxford have been busy across the south of England this year carrying out several course improvement projects on golf courses.
At Tandridge Golf Club in Surrey they have installed water storage tanks to provide emergency supplies in case of drought. The two 384,000-gallon tanks on concrete bases, with automatic circulation and transfer pipe work and pumps will enable the club to store mains water when it is cheaper during the winter months.
At Sene Valley Golf Club near Folkestone, Kent, they have replaced paths and at Moor Park Golf Club, Rickmansworth, they have replaced paths and put concrete bases and edgings to new and existing paths for green rubber wet pour surfacing.
Wimbledon Park Golf Club is better prepared for wet weather after the drainage work carried out by Speedcut Contractors. The magnificent 18-hole course, in the shadow of the All England Lawn Tennis Club, is on clay and required drainage round more than half a dozen holes.
Under foremen Peter Little the Speedcut team used one of their Mastenbroek laser-guided trencher and pipe-layers to carry out drainage over the course of a week.
“It had been incredibly wet the week before,” said Peter. “The clay was difficult to hand-dig and still wet in places but we were pleased with the finished result.”
Trenches were back-filled with shingle and sand and surfaces levelled with minimal disruption to the smooth running of the busy course.
During the Championships Fortnight Wimbledon Park GC becomes a car park for spectators and is closed to play.
It is a unique relationship and the superb surroundings at Wimbledon Park, with hundreds of specimen trees, an extensive lake and beautiful views across to the All England Club in the distance are a relaxing oasis in the London suburbs.
