Huxley Golf’s latest specification Premier Tee Turf 2 all-weather turf has been selected for a new practice tee installed at St Andrews Links’s Golf Practice Centre and Golf Academy.
Measuring 140ft long by 12ft deep (43m x 3.66m), the high performance Huxley surface is being used by the golf academy’s teaching professionals for individual tuition and group lessons as well as by golfers at St Andrews for general practice purposes. The full range of clubs can be played from the new surface and standard tee pegs can be inserted anywhere in the pile, allowing the latest large-headed drivers to be used just as on a grass tee.
Golf Practice Centre manager, Kevin Mackay, expects the all-weather tee to be used also by the Scottish Amateur Coaching Squads to alleviate pressure on St Andrews Links’s grass practice tees, particularly in wet and soft conditions and over winter.
Installed as one continuous long tee on a base specially prepared by St Andrews Links staff with advice and assistance from Huxley Golf, the new Huxley tee provides a total of 16 teeing positions across the same width as the 12 individual mats used previously on the practice ground. “The result is 30 per cent better utilisation of the available space while the front-to-rear depth of the new Huxley surface enables wear to be spread far more evenly than before across the entire playing surface,” commented Mr Mackay.
A key feature of Huxley Golf’s Premier Tee Turf 2 is its exceptional fibre density, removing the need to use a filler to pack the spaces between the fibres. This produces a very low maintenance surface which is enjoyed by all standards of golfer, whether they are playing a full range of golf shots directly from the surface or from a standard tee peg pushed into the pile.
“It holds a tee peg really well, enabling full-blooded drives to be played down the practice ground,” pointed out Mr Mackay. “Those hitting a ball straight off the surface say it has a very natural feel which allows the ball to be worked without jarring the arms or wrists. It plays similarly to grass without any of the associated wear or tear. Of great importance is that golfers enjoy playing on it. From my viewpoint, it ticks all the boxes.”
