One of the South’s leading nine-hole parkland golf courses is improving its facilities thanks to Huxley Golf, the PGA’s official supplier of all-weather surfaces.
Avington Park Golf Course in Hampshire has complemented an extensive clubhouse refurbishment with surrounding lawn and pathways built with new-generation Huxley Premier Leisure Turf.
The robust 20mm surface is designed to be both long-lasting and attractive. It resists wear and tear from studded golf shoes, carts and buggies and will complement the popular course’s natural tees, pathways and greens.
Robert Stent, owner of Avington Park, said: “We have invested in the course to offer members and visitors more comfortable facilities and, most importantly, a better round of golf. Huxley Golf has provided a surface that is comfortable and silent to walk on. It looks and feels just like mown turf and it will continue to look superb whatever the weather.”
Avington Park course manager Kevin Whatley installed the material himself following help with design and planning from Huxley Golf.
Huxley Golf’s Area Sales Manager James Stewart said: “Huxley Premier Leisure Turf helps to eliminate muddy slippery surfaces in winter and dusty conditions in the summer. It’s superb for courses, teaching academies, hotels, leisure and country clubs, and for golf practice at home.”
Designed primarily for lawns and fringes, the turf comes in a choice of two thicknesses, 35mm and 20mm, giving greenkeepers and course managers the option of a recently mown or lush lawn look. It is constructed using a top quality dark green polyethylene pile with a polypropylene thatch effect. This not only helps create a realistic look but means it is also very robust. The surface was developed following considerable research and development by Huxley Golf.
Set in beautiful parkland between Winchester and Alresford, Avington Park Golf Course is renowned for its friendly welcome. With its excellent greens and high standard of maintenance, the course has rightly earned the reputation as one of the best nine-hole courses in the South. The relaxed atmosphere makes it ideal for beginners and juniors, as well as being a challenge for regular golfers.
Renovation of club facilities began in January 2011 and incorporated a fully refurbished clubhouse including enlargement of the shop and clubroom areas, together with significant improvement to the changing rooms. Outside, a new covered seating area helps to protect resting players from inclement weather. Further modifications have been made to offer more variations to the 18 tee positions on the nine holes.
Avington Park joins a growing list of top golf courses who are using Huxley Golf all-weather installations to improve and extend their member and visitor offer all year round. The list includes St Andrews, Woodhall Spa, Celtic Manor and Gleneagles.
