Leonard Fisher has decided it is time to sell Windwhistle Golf Club, which he acquired 50 years ago, and has instructed Strutt & Parker as agents.
The country club at Cricket St. Thomas near Chard in Somerset, which includes an 18-hole golf course, squash courts and a restaurant/bar with leisure, commercial and residential planning and development opportunities is for sale through Strutt & Parker with a guide price of £1.3m – £1.5m.
The subscription for a 7-day member in 2006 is £496. There is no joining fee. Most subscriptions are renewed in March. In April 2006 there were approximately 450 members in all categories.
When Leonard Fisher acquired the course in 1955 it was a 9-hole course designed by J H Taylor who won the British Open Golf Tournament five times and was runner-up five times. Leonard acquired additional land and extended the course to 18 holes.
The golf course lies within an area of great landscape value. It is on high ground from which there are extensive views over the surrounding area. The land is mostly free draining so the course rarely closes due to rain.
The club, situated between Honiton, Taunton and Yeovil on the main A30, now has a course with magnificent views, a large practice ground and a substantial clubhouse with three squash courts and a 3 bedroom apartment.
There is planning consent for 12 covered bays on the practice ground and Leonard also acquired a variety of planning consents for development of the clubhouse including overnight accommodation and an indoor swimming pool.
It is therefore a one-off opportunity for a buyer to acquire an 18-hole golf course with the opportunity of further development. Full details are available from Charles Greville-Heygate of Strutt & Parker’s Leisure & Hotels Department in Salisbury 01722 344052 email: leisure@struttandparker.co.uk
