A year of fundraising events at Whittlebury Park Golf Club, near Towcester in Northamptonshire, raised £6,700 to boost funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK, the UK’s leading dementia research charity.

Over the months, Ladies’ Captain Alison Williams and Men’s Captain Jim Finch arranged numerous fundraising events to reach this grand total. Keen golfers took part in competitions on the beautiful 36 hole course, bid at auctions, attended dinners and paid many forfeits for their golfing errors.

Alison Williams expressed her delight at the success of the various activities and the inspiration for supporting Alzheimer’s Research UK: “Every year the club captains have the opportunity to nominate a charity and Jim and I didn’t hesitate in our choice of Alzheimer’s Research UK. We’ve both had experience of dementia through close relatives and know that research to find new treatments is desperately underfunded.

“With everyone’s enthusiasm and generosity, the amount raised far exceeded our expectations. We’re thrilled to learn that this money will pay for over 300 hours of pioneering dementia research or essential equipment for scientists.”

Alzheimer’s Research UK supporter David Read, from nearby Milton Keynes, collected the cheque on behalf of the charity and said: “It was a pleasure to meet Alison, Jim and other members of the club and receive this tremendous contribution on behalf of Alzheimer’s Research UK. I know what an important part this money will play in funding vital research to increase the understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

“My mother died three years ago after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s. It was devastating to see such a bright and able person become totally dependent on her family and carers. It was made even worse knowing there was very little that could be done to help her.”

Miranda Mays, Community Fundraising Manager for Alzheimer’s Research UK, added: “This is a brilliant result and we really appreciate all the efforts made by everyone at Whittlebury Park Golf Club. The money raised will bring us closer to finding ways to diagnose, prevent, treat and cure dementia.

“Over 7,000 people in Northamptonshire live with the reality of dementia today. Dementia can only be defeated through research but funding lags far behind other serious diseases. We rely entirely on our wonderful supporters to fund our vital dementia research.”
