Doonbeg facilities all set for Spring opening

12.10am 29th December 2005 - Course Development

Doonbeg Golf Club is on schedule to unveil its magnificent clubhouse, accommodation, pro shop, spa, restaurant and bar facilities in early May. Construction work on the luxury project is nearing completion with final decoration / finishing of the facilities already underway in some areas.
The construction project, which commenced in 2004, has consisted of the building of 46 luxury suites, the clubhouse, pro shop, spa and restaurant and bar facilities. Already the 46 suites being constructed in this phase of the development have been sold in advance of opening. The club has also embarked on a highly successful employment drive to fill 80 new jobs.
The suites, available for purchase by members of the club, are a key feature at Doonbeg. Fifteen of them are contained in main building, The Lodge, which also houses the clubhouse, restaurants, bars and spa. The remainder, consisting of the Norman, Garden House and Courtyard Suites are adjacent to the Lodge. All are built and finished to the highest luxury specifications.
The majority of the suites are being let back to the Club, making them available as accommodation. Guests of the Lodge will have preferred access to the course, dining and spa.
The main two contractors for the project are John Paul Construction, Dublin and L & M Keating, Kilmihil, Co Clare. Dublin based architects Campbell Conroy Hickey worked with architects John Haley from Kiawah Island, South Carolina on the architecture.
Doonbeg general manager Joe Russell is delighted with the final facilities. “I believe we are creating a unique experience here at Doonbeg,” he said. “Whilst the golf course will always be at the heart of Doonbeg, the Lodge and its amenities will ensure that Doonbeg is ranked with the best luxury properties in Ireland.”
This year over 15,000 golfers from all over the world played the course. When complete the total project will represent an investment of €150 million by the US company Kiawah Development Partners (KDP).
KDP is the master developer of Kiawah Island, a 10,000-acre sea island located 21 miles south of Charleston, South Carolina. The company’s subsidiaries include Kiawah Island Real Estate; The Kiawah Island Club, which encompasses the Tom Fazio-designed River Course, the Tom Watson-designed Cassique, The Beach Club and Sasanqua, the members-only spa; and Doonbeg Golf Club in Ireland.
